In recent years the trend of increasing yields, the use of non mineralised straight feeds, prolific genetics and the increasing use of home-grown forage has meant that mineral levels in ruminants have tended to drop. The results of which are shown by typically a drop in the animals health with the corresponding increase in foot problems and lameness, and a drop in fertility as two of the main problems.

To counter this we would analyse the forage and pre-mix portion (if included) of the ration to establish the background level of minerals being offered. In the case of dairy cows we can take a bulk milk sample to ascertain the animals mineral status. A mineral is then formulated to suit the particular need, whether it be for dairy, beef or sheep. In systems where ad-lib minerals are used, such as self-feed, or where animals are out at grass we use a molassed 50kg or 20kg block to carry the mineral and increase energy levels.

The trend over the last few years has been towards 'mail order minerals' where price has been the main consideration and quality is very much second place. Our opinion is that if the mineral is not the correct one, or that the raw materials are of low quality and so have low absorbency rates, then the mineral is poor value for money.

We use two companies to provide a comprehensive range of products and analytical services both UK based and using only the best raw materials. Scotmin are based in Ayr and SCA Nutec in North Yorkshire. For more information and online brochures, click on the logos below.
